artist statement
My work mostly comes from my imagination. Inspiration for my work comes from every format of media I experience. Whether it be books, shows, music, etc. For example, I am usually heavily influenced by fiction and fantasy in particular because I enjoy and consume those the most. Even so, starting off in that plane of fantasy, or sometimes injecting elements of that into artwork gives me freedom and want to create, to display my thoughts on energy, motion, and line.

For the male portraits in this lineup of work I used my own face and expressions as a reference. With that as a starting point, I asked myself;” Where can I go with this.” This gave me the freedom to change the pieces as I went, instead of having a set in stone idea. The mainly charcoal face then pastel everything else was done first, and the other was second. I used the opposite material for each expression intentionally because I wanted to see how it would change the way that I and viewers would approach the piece.

The mediums that I mainly use when working are graphite, charcoal, ink, and pastel, but I am always looking to expand my arsenal. With my art I want to manipulate these mediums to capture a type of flowing energy using expressive colours and or mark-making. The energy that’s in movement, sound, lines...etc. I want my audience to explore each line and stroke, and see where that leads them. When I am creating art I usually fall into a rhythm and release of motion and line especially when sketching. My goal as an artist is to be able to convey the connectivity of motion, and the capture of energy on a 2d surface when creating art.

Aaron was born and raised in St.Louis Missouri. Aaron grew up sketching, and because of that pencil, pen, charcoal and pastel are the mediums that he enjoys using the most. The physicality, responsiveness, and direct control that these mediums offer are nice. He was influenced and inspired by music, cartoons, comics, and books with his art growing up. Connecting these various subjects with art is truly a driving force for his work.

Aaron has been in orchestral music ensembles for a decade+ as a cellist so he has experience in group work and being a smaller piece of a larger puzzle. This brings familiarity with seeing the different elements in his work and allows for a unique approach. Because there are many similarities between creating music when playing an instrument and when creating art. He would like to explore that in his work sometime in the future.
