artist statement 
My body of work celebrates Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Sensory Sensitivity Disorder by installing a thoughtfully designed sensory space. Using many art forms, including tufting, paper art, printmaking, graphic design, sculpture, and sound and light mixing, I hope to showcase these disorders positively, praiseworthy, and unmasked. I also hope to explore the uniqueness and intricacies of how people with ASD, AHDH, and SSD process the world.

This space will be educational, calming, and aesthetically pleasing for all types of people, but every piece I have made was with my daughter in mind. Using different art forms, I hope to create a space to honor her and everything wonderful about what autism means for her at this time in her life. I hope this work becomes a starting point of a lifetime of meaningful art.

Abby Platte is St. Louis based, multidisciplinary artist that has been honing her craft and adding to her artistic techniques since a very young age. She has done commissions that range from painted portraits and graphic designs for companies, to handmade jewelry, clothing, and pottery. Her passion lies in the gathering, learning, and eventual teaching of art.

Recently her art has taken her on the path of research and exploration of sensory spaces and disability. Through her daughter’s autism diagnosis, she has begun to re-learn what being disabled means to her and what it looks like to her daughter in the art world. Inclusivity and awareness are a significant part of her current practice.
