artist statement
In my art, I have explored and researched different art methods that resulted in my creations. It appears that my source of information and influences comes from nature. I understand that nature is a broad term to use when describing art; however, the environment in my work ranges from scenic landscapes, textures from botanical elements, and even forms from the human body. My progress, from my point of view, is to figure out what works best with my new Printmaking technique. The new idea is using fabric as a plat/template to create a texture, which opened my imagination about colors, patterns, and mediums. I use different types of inks, paints, and watercolors that work quite well with the Fabric plate process. With the fabric plate, I mostly use linen or cotton since it works well with embroidering. I'm also using wood plates for gluing on strings, laces, and other yarn and fabric materials to get a desired texture and shape.
What inspired me to use wood templates for fabric printmaking is Japanese printmaking. In addition to this, Japanese art styles have also influenced my work. I'm currently working on pieces that have the Mokulito and Mokahanga process. Both techniques use wood to create the plate. The Fabric medium and the Japanese methods of printmaking are combine together in my work. I can't recall how many mistakes I have made. Then I realized I enjoyed what happened and that it brings character to my pieces.

Jessica Handley is a University of Missouri- St. Louis student majoring in Printmaking that is currently living in St. Charles, Missouri. She was born in St. Peters, Missouri, on the hottest day of May 1996. Her childhood consisted of exploring and experiencing the scenic riverfront view of Historic Downtown St. Charles; which, lead to her major influences in creating art. The Historic area down to the riverfront is full of vibrant colors, different styles of architecture, sculptures, parks, and museums filled with history and art. Naturally growing up and going to school in St. Charles, she went to St. Charles Community College and obtained her Associate's Degree in General Education. From there, she spent a semester abroad at Canterbury Christ Church University in England. She gained the knowledge and experience of photography during her stay abroad. Also, she learned of different art styles, languages, and cultures from Europe.
