artist statement
explorations of place,
the passage of time,
and what's left behind

 My work is built with the materials of construction. It's built of plywood on studs, with drywall mud, latex paint, construction adhesive, and the like, applied and removed with the tools of a builder. 

And while my works are new constructions, they are inspired by old, aging construction - rusty rebar in crumbling concrete, peeling paint on weathered wood, worn plaster revealing decaying brick beneath. The work is inspired by architecture that shows the marks of aging, marks left behind by those who have come before, and the toll of an unrelenting nature. 

I find beauty in the faded colors, heightened textures, and altered forms of a built environment worn by time. Through the process of constructing, in the state of mind that is painting, I work toward acceptance of my own inevitable decline.

Kim Hany currently studies studio art at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. She has a long history as a student of the arts, studying art and design at St. Louis Community College, Maryville University, and Washington University. Throughout her education her work has been selected for juried student exhibits and design competitions. She has won numerous awards for her work, including awards in figure drawing, sculpture, interior design, and set design. She has served several museum internships, as well as serving as an “art commando” volunteer for the arts. She is a certified art educator, with experience teaching K-12 through the post-secondary level.
